Overview

Each context represents a real world thing that could be searched for via Search UI.

Administrative Boundaries

A geographical region, typically under the jurisdiction of a particular government. These are boundaries that a demarcated by the government or acting body to allocate an area on which governance occur, i.e.the tier of government Municipality vs Provincial vs National.

Municipality

A Municipality is usually a single administrative division having corporate status and powers of self-government or jurisdiction as granted by national and regional laws to which it is subordinate. The term municipality may also mean the governing or ruling body of a given municipality. The Municipality is an area defined by the government, which executes all the functions of local government to service the general population residing in that area. The boundary is demarcated by the Municipal Demarcation Board.

Town

A Town is a human settlement, defined as a built-up area with a name and defined boundaries. A Town can have some governing authority which normally reside in the municipality. Town boundaries created within Lightstone. Towns are generally larger than villages and smaller than cities, though the criteria to distinguish between them vary considerably in different parts of the world.

Suburb

A Suburb generally refers to a built-up area within a larger town. Some non-urban suburbs exist and would generally be the rural area surrounding towns. A suburb is a commercial, mixed-use or residential area. Suburbs have boundaries and a name and roll up into a town but cannot cross provincial boundaries. It can exist either as part of a city/urban area and can often have a large degree of employment. In some metropolitan areas they exist as separate residential communities within commuting distance of a city.Suburb boundaries created within Lightstone.

Places (PI)

Places represent a layer of interest, this data originates from within Lightstone and is created from the data that we process and is maintained in our regular data maintenance. A “Place” has a name, a classification and will display as a point on the map, i.e.Oliver Tambo Airport. These are entities that have a somewhat fixed, physical extension.

Estate (EST)

An Estate is a homogenous area, normally in a residential built-up area that has a name and a boundary. An Estate can have any combination of a Sectional Title/Scheme(ST/SS) and Full-Title/Freehold(FH) properties and these can include farms. Industrial, Office and Retail Parks typically look or function like an estate, however these would not form part of the normal residential estate reporting - Lightstone reports on residential estates.

Sectional Scheme (SS)

Sectional Schemes/Titles can consist of single or multiple phases. In order for a scheme to reflect it would have to be registered at the Deeds Office. A scheme can have an address or multiple addresses - These addresses link to the land cadastral(CAD) associated with the scheme. All units within a scheme can link to the same address or addresses. A scheme can also be unique, i.e. Free standing and/or form part of an existing estate.

Property (PROP)

A Property can reflect in one of two Title Deed types i.e. Full-Title(FH) or Sectional-Title(SS/ST). Any property can be categorised in only one of these options. For Full-Title properties, a property can be defined as a Farm, an Erven/Erf or a Holding, where a Sectional-Title property can only reflect as a Unit. These types originate from and are registered legally by the Deeds Office. Properties are typically described by a legal description and some properties have an address. Lightstone’s reporting only includes actively registered properties. Not all properties would or are supposed to have addresses.

Address (Addr)

An Address is an obvious way to refer to a location that contains any number of properties or entities. An Address is linked to the land cadastral(CAD) associated with a particular property or groupings of properties. Normally an Address constitutes a Street-Number, Street-Name, Street-Typecombination followed by the Suburb, Town and Postal-Code. Some entities have information that can be considered as an address, like an Estate-Name, Suburb, Town and Postal-Code. A legal descrption and address will in most cases render issues with locating the correct property.

Entities

Entities refer to an area of land cosisting of any number of cadastrals(CAD’s) distinctly identifiable but are grouped within a single boundary. This can include Estates, Schemes, Shopping Centres, Corporate Parks, Organizations, Companies and/or People, etc. An entity has a name and a boundary.Entities are classified by their main usage.

A Legal Entity refers to the type of ownership associated with a property. There are only two options currently:

  • Natural Person - Ownership is registered in a natural person’s name.
  • Legal Entity - Ownership is registered in a company, trust or cc name.
